In the past, Seagate did not allow installing different versions of Crystal Reports on the same machine, it would ask you to uninstall the current version or would "upgrade" the version present on the machine by uninstalling it and then installing the new version. Because of the difference in DLLs being installed to common (general) locations, having different versions on the same machine could generate conflicts and even unexpected results.
For version 9, Crystal Decisions changed the location of its files and they now allow having other versions of Crystal Reports on the same machine along with version 9. This kind of installation where you have multiple versions on the same machine is called "side-by-side" installation.
In the What's New in Crystal 9 section of the website we find the following information:
Hassle-free upgrade experience
===========================
Side-by-side installation - Install and use Crystal Reports 9 on the same machine as previous versions of Crystal Reports to make migrating existing reports easier.
In Crystal Decisions Knowledge Base, we can find articles on some problems caused by side-by-side installation, as you can see by accessing the link for articles below:
- Crystal Reports (CR) 8 registration number appears in CR 9 Registration Wizard
- Report Application Server applications stop functioning after RAS 9 upgrade
