Documentation

SQL database drivers are an integral part of the DataFlex environment. The drivers are included in the installation of current DataFlex Studio, Windows Client and WebApp Server products. DataFlex includes:

Native database drivers support

  • IBM DB2 v11.5 and higher
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2022 (including LocalDB) using ODBC Driver 18 for SQL Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019 (including LocalDB) using ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2017 (including LocalDB) using ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (including LocalDB) using ODBC Driver 13.1 for SQL Server or higher
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (including LocalDB) using ODBC Driver 11 or 13 for SQL Server or higher
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP4 including LocalDB) using SQL Server Native Client 11.0 or higher

Enhanced ODBC driver

The DataFlex ODBC driver has been specially tuned to optimize performance with specific databases using their corresponding ODBC connectors and drivers. Databases supported via ODBC are:

  • MySQL 8.0.19 and higher
  • MariaDB 10.5.4 and higher
  • Amazon Aurora 2.07.2 (based on MySQL 5.7)
  • PostgreSQL 12.3
  • Oracle 18c and higher

You can find ODBC configuration information specific to certain database backends, like MySQL (MySQL.int) and Oracle (Oracle.int), in the \Bin directory. These files should be modified according to your specific installed version of the target database.

To better understand the various ODBC pieces that work together to make access to your data possible, read our blog, A Closer Look Into the ODBC World.

Other ODBC Data Sources

A variety of additional data sources can be accessed through ODBC including SQLite, SQLBase, Microsoft Access, flat file databases like dBase and even non-database data like Excel and ASCII files. The use of the DataFlex ODBC driver requires the installation of a specific ODBC driver for the target data source.

DataFlex SQL Drivers 20.0 and later are Unicode drivers and cannot be used with non-Unicode DataFlex 2019 - 19.1 and older. To acquire the most current SQL Drivers for Unicode environment (DataFlex 2021 - 20.0 and newer), simply install the latest DataFlex build, which also includes the newest drivers.

How to get the latest DataFlex SQL Drivers for DataFlex 2019 - 19.1 (and older)

For older DataFlex releases, we publish a DataFlex SQL Driver update ZIP file that contains the latest drivers ready to install in properly licensed deployment environments that already have prior DataFlex SQL drivers.

Download the DataFlex SQL Driver Update 6.3.0.25 ZIP. See the ReadMe.

You can determine the driver version installed in your DataFlex environments by clicking Help | About | System Information in the DataFlex Studio. Unless you have specific reason not to, we recommend that you update your installation to the latest DataFlex SQL Drivers available along with the corresponding ODBC driver (e.g. ODBC Driver 17 or MySQL Connector/ODBC 8) available for the target database or data source.

By installing the above update, DataFlex 2019 - 19.1 (and older) will be considered supported for the databases listed above when used with the newest DataFlex SQL Drivers and corresponding ODBC drivers.

For supported OS versions, please refer to the DataFlex environment where the database drivers will be installed.

Operating System Updates

Operating system vendors frequently release updates, patches and service packs. Some issues encountered with our products may be resolved by newer operating system versions released by the vendor.

Unsupported & Obsolete Platforms

Data Access Worldwide will not investigate reported issues in our "Current Products" that occur on an operating system, database server or other third party product if, before or since our product’s release, the vendor’s “Mainstream” or similar support level has expired or the third party product has otherwise become obsolete.

Microsoft SQL Server Express LocalDB

LocalDB is truly a local database only - you cannot connect to a LocalDB instance from a remote computer. According to Microsoft, LocalDB is intended for use by developers’s and is not designed for typical business database application requirements.

LocalDB information from Microsoft is available here.
